United States And Mexico United By Bicycles

United States of America and Mexico are indeed different in some ways, but not many. Even though there is a tall wall of cement and wire between the two countries, there are many other things that unify us and bring us together despite the multiple barriers that people in power put along the US-Mexican border.

One of many other things that makes us -Americans and Mexicans- good neighbors and friends is the wonderful sport of cycling. We both organize yearly road and mountain cycling events and get together in both sides of the countries to race, ride, make friends, learn from each other about how to become better cyclists, etc.

Unfortunately, this year was the last event for one of the most popular bi-national cycling events of the world that had been held for 28 years in Rosarito-Ensenada, Mexico, the 50 mile Rosarito-Ensenada Fun Bicycle Ride. The organizers told us that the reason for terminating this amazing cycling gathering was that the financial situation in both countries was in recession and had caused a severe decline in the assistance of cyclists making the organization of the event economically very painful and non profitable anymore.

Long time ago, before the Gulf War, before the 9/11 attacks, before the Afghanistan and the Iraq wars, there used to assist to this magnificent road cycling ride around 18 to 20 thousand cyclists from all over the world, including England, Australia, Spain, Italy, Canada, but mainly from all over United States and Mexico.
All these horrible wars and financial crisis around the world have destroyed what one day was voted one of the Top 3 International Cycling Events of the world.

Maybe one day we will have this ride back, I don't know. In the meantime, I will definitely continue with my own daily cycling rides, just because they make me stronger and healthier, they make me a happier and a kinder person. Why kinder?, you might ask. To tell you the truth, I have no idea as to why I am a kinder person after pedaling my bicycle and being in muscle pain.
One thing is for sure: if I don't bike ride really hard for at least 188 miles a week.....I am not in a very good mood.

What a shame they ended this ride! I participated one time and it was so much fun and beautiful. I hope when the economy gets better they will again have the ride.

I did this bicycle ride 2 years ago in April and October and it was absolutely fabulous. Had lots of fun and made friends there.
It's sad it's gone now.

Not a good news man. I loved that ride. I went in 2002 and 2005 and had the greatest time.
I like what you say about the two countries though. We might be a bit different in culture and what not, but cycling unify us and makes us a family.
Props to your post.

hahaha, I love what you said about being in a bad mood when you don't bike. That is true for me too. If I don't exercise at all I feel like crap and like I'm moving in a slow motion and my day doesn't go quite well.

I had never heard of that ride and now that I do I wish I could go. Maybe they will try again in a year or two.

Wonderful article and wonderful article about. But I got admit that I cannot picture Livingstrong being in "a bad mood", even when she doesn't exercise. I just can't picture her being mad.
Anyways, that statement made me laugh so much because it reminded me of my sister Elly. When she didn't go out for her usual 5 mile run she was in a pretty bad mood and you didn't want to be close to her. So mom, dad, my other sister and myself where happy when we woke up and so that she was back all sweaty. That meant that she was going to be in a good mood for the rest of the day.

Sports are one of the most wonderful activities humans have created. Sports unify people, cultures and countries, and cycling is one of them.
I hope more of us got together doing sports, laughing more, less war, less pain.
Great post.
