Taxes On Sport Drinks

I decided to BUMP this article I wrote back on May 15, 2009 due to several readers of my blog requesting me to re-post it. They want to add some new comments and get some new feedback from new members of this blog.
Upon request, here it is.

This is ridiculous. US Senate leaders want to put new federal taxes on soda and other sugary drinks that would go to pay for an overhaul of the national health-care system that President Obama wants to implement.

"While many factors promote weight gain, soft drinks are the only food or beverage that has been shown to increase the risk of overweight and obesity, which, in turn, increase the risk of diabetes, stroke, and many other health problems," Michael Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is pushing the idea, said in his testimony. "Soft drinks are nutritionally worthless…[and] are directly related to weight gain, partly because beverages are more conducive to weight gain than solid foods."
I am an extremely healthy person, well fit, an athlete who likes to drink a sport drink before my daily training because it gives me some energy, especially because I wake up at 4:00 am so I can go out to the streets to road bike at 5:15 am to avoid crazy drivers. So yes, I need my Red Bull or my Monster to wake up and get some good energy at the start.
And since I bike ride for about 2:30 to 3:00 hrs average everyday (weekends even more) I definitely want Gatorade to replenish the potassium, sodium and glucose.

Why in the freaking world these stoopid people want to hurt my wallet and millions of other athletes's wallets as well? Why, why, why? They don't think properly, that is the problem. They have terrible financial chaos in the country. They didn't know how to manage Medicare and now they pretend to know how to implement universal or national health-care? For goodness sake, are they serious?

I find this to be simply pathetic. Putting higher taxes on Gatorade, FRS (the one that Lance Armstrong promotes), Red Bull, and other sport, energy drinks or sodas won't teach people to be healthy.

That is not how they [politicians] educate people. That is how they empty the wallet of the people!

  7. David Paterson? if so, why him?

  8. Yes, David Paterson. He started the whole thing in New York proposing an increase of 18% tax on sugary drinks back in March. He had to drop the proposal because the New Yorkers complained big time.

  9. I agree 100%, Livingstrong and with all the comments, taxing people will not make them begin eating in a healthy way and in fact people will get so stressed from all the taxes that high stress levels will cause a whole other set of health problems!

  11. If I have to pay for the health care of the people, then I WANT the right to tell them how to eat, what to eat and how to live.

I don't want to provide health care to people that live an unhealthy lifestyle, that is not my responsibility. That is completely non-sense and a waste of my money.

We would be much better off providing educational training so people can get a job and pay for their own health care.

  12. More fat taxes to pay for these continued bailouts of Warren Buffet at Goldman Sucks.

Taxes, inflation, poverty, austerity, tent cities, corruption, lies, fake money, socialism.
Get used to it fellas, we Americans have become too dumb to question the very crooks at Goldman Sucks, JP Morgan and many others to know why all this is happening to us.
The tax money will never go to quality health care...

THIS IS HOW YOU PAY FOR BAILOUTS!

  19. Tax the bankers. Capital gains tax on bonuses should do the trick.

Why are you paying so much money for ready made drinks by the way? Try this recipe:

    1 ltr =

1/3 cup of sugar (US measure)
    1/4 tspn salt
Orange juice to add flavour (Quantity to own taste)
Water for the rest of the solution.

Another thing that you can do is to eat a banana before you ride. This has a high potasium content and should prevent cramping. If you are going to need to access a lot of energy quicky, before a race for example, have 2 strong cups of coffee. Coffee allows you to access your carbs quickly, just what you need before a race.

  20. Excellent recipe, Alex, great advice about the banana and coffee. I usually have my banana after the bike ride/race. I'll try it before and see the results.
