Soup Lines VS Food Stamps

The number of Americans relying on food stamps to feed their families has increased tremendously. The country that has lead the world financially for decades has about 36,492 million citizens collecting food stamps. That means that about one in eight Americans are currently receiving this benefit.

This is how I see the current Greatest Depression expressing itself in today's social programs (there were not food stamps back in 1929)

Great Depression 1929= SOUP LINES

Greatest Depression 2009 - ? = FOOD STAMPS

Another data that came out today and contradicts the "recovery" the talking heads of the mainstream media are talking about is the unemployment number, which has been seasonally adjusted to 10.2%. That means that there about 7.3 million jobs have been lost in the financial recession...officially, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The REAL unemployment numbers are way higher if we take in consideration other factors that the Bureau -under the Labor Department- cannot count for different reasons, like the "disgruntled" or "not in labor force"

10.2% unemployment???!!!

Bullocks!

I wonder what it'd be if they included all those whose unemployment insurance has run out, those who are under-employed, those whose hours have been cut back, those who have given up looking..... ..... REALITY?

This is a very scary time. I have been on this planet for 5 decades. I do remember the 1980's. The last time unemployment was this high. But back then interest rates were high and Volker was wringing inflation from the US which was caused by Johnsons war on poverty, the Vietnam war and the oil embargo. (Governments big spending).

Carters ineptitude just magnified the situation. With Reagan and Volker things began to change, the Fed could lower rates, unlike today. Reagan slashed taxes across the board for EVERYONE, not just a select few. He also, rolled back egregious regulations put on business by Carter. Today we have the opposite, higher taxes, greater spending, more and more regulation.

Reagan and Volckers policies created a 20 year expansion, dropping unemployment, and the benefits to society that come from it. Now, we have a handcuffed fed because of easy money, and a socialist administration that will not allow the policies that have worked in the past.

These are truly trying times.

I concur we are transiting into uncharted territory and as is the norm those with the least resources are feeling the pain first. As with the souplines/foodstamp allegory, I'm sure there are many other factors that are hiding the terror of our real situation from the general populace. The TV is filled daily with trivialities and every economic number is spun as a "good sign" but look at the following chart to see what is really happening http://cohort11.americanobserver.net/latoyaegwuekwe/multimediafinal.html

watch the tragedy unfold
