ING New York Marathon 2009

Plenty of exciting moments at the ING New York Marathon 2009, where nearly 44,000 runners started the 40th edition of the race Sunday.
The pro elite female runners started first, the male and female pro elite wheelchair athletes next, then the pro elite male runners and last the amateur runners.
The amateur athletes still on the run, many famous faces, like Anthony Edwards, famous actor for his appearance in the ER series as Dr Mark Greene -a TV show marathon itself, no? 15 years!
My deep admiration and respect goes to Paula Radcliffe, a three time New York City marathon winner -2004, 2007 and 2008- who today finished in 4th place due to a stress fracture of her left femur which caused her a broken leg on May this year. Finishing in 4th place overall makes her a winner, in my opinion.

Here are some preliminary results of the NY Marathon:

Pro Elite Women

FIRST PLACE:
Derartu Tulu, 39 years old, a fantastic Ethiopian runner. Finished in 2:28:52 hrs. I love this athlete, a real roll model. Lots of courage, smart, classy and kind. Good for you Tulu, you have a piece of my heart.

Pro Elite Men

FIRST PLACE:
Meb Keflezighi, the first USA men's winner in this marathon since 1982. Finished in 2:09:15 hrs.

Pro Elite Women Wheelchair

FIRST PLACE:
Edith Hunkeler of Switzerland, finished in 1:59:15 hrs and this is her 5th marathon she wins.

Pro Elite Men Wheelchair

FIRST PLACE:
Kurt Fearnley, an Australian athlete. This is the 4th marathon he wins in New York.

The NYC Marathon is THE largest spectator sporting event in the world. Read that again! About 3 million people come out to see the race. The crowds never thin more than 3-deep, lining virtually the entire race course. The bands, the kids, the cheering, the energy... well there's nothing like it.
- NYC is amazing; you run past and through iconic places, neighborhoods, buildings, etc. Amazing.

I've never experienced a race so organized and charged with energy! I literally ran the last two miles with a dopey grin on my face. :)

This was my 1st marathon and I heard it was special, but it can't be truly appreciated until you experience. This should be a pilgrimage for all marathoners!

How can you go wrong with NY city - what a fantastic town. The fans were phenomenal. More impressive than Boston, which is really saying something.
Best marathon in the world, IMHO!

I had a bad race, performance-wise, but even in my worst struggles the crowd would bring me up over and over. But I really loved it and I want to do it again next year, I'll be more prepared though. Thank you New Yorkers, you are a fabulous crowd!
