"I don't want to die at 50 but if my cancer is incurable, what can I do?," he told Paris-Match magazine in January.
"I love life, I love a good laugh, travel, books, good food. I'm a typical Frenchman. I'm not afraid of death, I just don't want to die."
Mr. Fignon won the Tour de France twice, in 1983 and 1984, won the Giro d'Italia in 1989 and the Milan-San Remo Classic in 1988 and 1989. At his time, he was considered amongst the best cyclists of the world, despite his later admission to doping.
My heart goes out to his family and friends and to all of us, fanatic and professional cyclists who really have a deep and total love for this wonderful sport, cycling.

Hats off to him!

ReplyDeleteLaurent Fignon had great cycling skills and used to teach them in a very eloquent way to any cyclist interested in learning from him. He was known as "the professor" or "the teacher" of cycling.
