Lloyds Banking to Cut 15,000 Jobs - WSJ.com

BY MARGOT PATRICK

LONDON—Lloyds Banking Group PLC's shares leapt more than 7% Thursday after Chief Executive Antonio Horta-Osorio said the bank will cut costs sharply and invest in its four key U.K. units as part of a keenly awaited strategy revamp.

Under the new strategy, Lloyds is to cut 15,000 jobs, make major investments in its Lloyds TSB, Halifax, Bank of Scotland banks and Scottish Widows insurance business, tap more wealthy customers in the U.K. and reduce its international presence to around 15 countries from 30.

By 2014, it expects to have shaved £1.5 billion ($2.41 billion) from annual costs, adding to ...

Teachers among 750,000 on strike in UK - World news - Europe - msnbc.com

LONDON — British teachers and civil servants went on strike on Thursday over plans to reform public-sector pensions.
Up to 750,000 public-sector workers — including driving examiners and customs officials — were expected to join the walkout, part of a growing wave of opposition to the Conservative-led government's deficit-cutting regime of tax hikes, benefit curbs and spending cuts.
Mirroring protests across continental Europe against government-imposed austerity , the strike could be a taste of wider protests to come later this year.
Many schools across Britain were closed or classes disrupted and air passengers were expected to face delays because immigration officials were among the striking workers. Courts and government buildings were also affected.

Dollar Seen Losing Global Reserve Status - CNBC

The U.S. dollar will lose its status as the global reserve currency over the next 25 years, according to a survey of central bank reserve managers who collectively control more than $8,000 billion.

MY COMMENTARY:
25 years? What about within the next 3 to 5 years. When the global currency has been devalued so badly against a baby currency like the Euro, well, what can you expect from the US dollar, nothing but a total failure.

More than half the managers, who were polled by UBS [UBS 17.35 0.04 (+0.23%)], predicted that the dollar would be replaced by a portfolio of currencies within the next 25 years.

That marks a departure from previous years, when the central bank reserve managers have said the dollar would retain its status as the sole reserve currency.

UBS surveyed more than 80 central bank reserve managers, sovereign wealth funds and multilateral institutions with more than $8,000 billion in assets at its annual seminar for sovereign institutions last week. The results were not weighted for assets under management.

Government plans secret survey on doctor access

WASHINGTON — Alarmed by a shortage of primary care doctors, Obama administration officials are recruiting a team of "mystery shoppers" to pose as patients, call doctors' offices and request appointments to see how difficult it is for people to get care when they need it.

The administration says the survey will address a "critical public policy problem": the increasing shortage of primary care doctors, including specialists in internal medicine and family practice. It will also try to discover whether doctors are accepting patients with private insurance while turning away those in government health programs that pay lower reimbursement rates.

Biology of Aging - Legendary Pharmaceuticals

Senescence is the biological process of age-related deterioration in function.
The study of human senescence has been fraught with controversy, conflicting theories, and puzzling data. Gerontologists do not even agree on whether "pure" senescence is distinct from diseases of old age. Medical science has cataloged many signs of senescence. It manifests as dozens of changes in cells, tissues, and organs during aging. Human life is supported by a complex network of biochemical substances and reactions which affect the physical state and vitality of the body and mind. Senescent changes can be seen in the rate and outcome of many of these reactions. However, many of these changes are secondary effects of senescence, rather than primary causes. A summary of some of the secondary effects in human aging can be found in the Dossier on Ageing prepared by the Health on the Net Foundation.

Coca-Cola to raise prices in July - Yahoo! Finance

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Coca-Cola Co plans to raise prices on its soft drinks by 3 percent to 4 percent in July, in addition to a 2 percent increase taken earlier this year, a company spokesman said on Friday.

News of the increases -- to be implemented on July 31 -- was first reported by industry newsletter Beverage Digest, which quoted retail customer pricing letters as saying the increases were due to higher-than-anticipated commodity costs.

Like many food and drink companies, Coca-Cola is facing higher costs for goods like corn, oil and packaging.

Coca-Cola, the world's largest soft drink maker, said earlier this year that it expected to raise prices in that range, but the timing was unknown.

U.S. Postal Service to Stop Paying Into Worker Pension Fund - Bloomberg

The U.S. Postal Service, facing insolvency without approval to delay a $5.5 billion payment for worker health benefits, will suspend contributions to an employee retirement account to save $800 million this year.
The Postal Service will stop paying employer contributions to the defined-benefit Federal Employees Retirement System, which covers about 85 percent of career postal workers, it said today in an e-mailed statement. The $115 million payment, made every other week, will stop on June 24, the statement said.
Suspending payments to the retirement account will help “conserve cash and preserve liquidity,” the statement said. The agency estimates it has overpaid by $6.9 billion and has asked Congress to pass legislation to return that money.
Congress must “make bold, quick and substantive reforms,” said Art Sackler, executive director of the Washington-based Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service, which represents corporate mail customers. “The USPS is hanging by a thread.”

Cavendish: On Best Form For Two Years Ahead Of Tour De France | Cyclingnews.com

Manxman excited about Grande Boucle but silent on future

Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad) on Tuesday issued a warning to his rivals hoping to end his sprint hegemony at the Tour de France, calling his current form “the best I’ve had in the past two years.”

Various media, and in particular French newspaper L’Équipe, speculated at the Tour of Switzerland last week that Cavendish's failure to win a stage was indicative of a lack of form ahead of the Grande Boucle.

Speaking to journalists in Bar Italia in London’s Soho on Wednesday, Cavendish said that nothing could be further from the truth.

US Doctors stick patients with paperwork fees Vital Signs - MarketWatch

By Kristen Gerencher, MarketWatch
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Need a doctor to fill out a health form for your child’s summer camp, school or day care? It may cost you extra.

As many primary-care doctors struggle to cover the growing costs of running their practices, some are charging patients extra for completing paperwork outside of a regular office visit. Per-item fees, where they exist, have risen in the past few years, practice-management experts say, and typically range $5 to more than $20 a pop. On the high end, the fee can rival or exceed your office-visit copay, depending on your health plan.

Is China dumping Treasuries for euros? - Jun. 21, 2011

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- America's number one creditor appears to be losing some appetite for U.S. government securities, according to Standard Chartered Bank.
In a report issued Tuesday, the bank argues that the Treasury Department's official system for tracking China's purchases of U.S. debt is 'misleading' because of the way it tracks transactions.
Often China will buy assets through brokers in London and Hong Kong and the Treasury International Capital data (TIC) is based on where the orders were booked so it doesn't fully capture all of China's purchases, said the report.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (MarketWatch) — Big names like Nouriel Roubini, Jeremy Grantham and Bob Rodriguez are slinging around words like “disaster” in forecasting the stock market, advising extreme caution and defense strategies. Contrast that with hot headlines about the Dow “storming back soon,” soaring to the “Next Stop, Dow 20,000.”

Warning, folks, you’re in a new cycle of irrational exuberance.

Unfortunately, the next crash will be bigger. Wall Street and its puppets in Washington never learned the lessons of the 2008 crash. Today their lobbyists are spending hundreds of millions to kill reforms, keeping in place the same toxic, unregulated Reaganomics that triggered the 2008 crash, setting America up for another, bigger crash, kicking America’s problems down the road, one more time.

18 Signs The Collapse Of Society Is Accelerating

As the U.S. economy collapses, the thin veneer of civilization that we all take for granted is going to begin to disappear. In fact, there are already an increasing number of signs that the collapse of society is accelerating. In cities such as Chicago, roving packs of young people are "mob robbing" local businesses, randomly assaulting tourists and shoppers and are even pulling people out of vehicles. This isn't just happening in the "bad areas" anymore. Over the past couple of months this type of crime has been common in some of the wealthiest areas of Chicago. In fact, many Chicago residents are now referring to "the Magnificent Mile" as "the Mug Mile". But it isn't just in Chicago that this is happening. During this past Memorial Day weekend, cities all over the United States experienced a stunning wave of mass violence. We are supposed to be an "example" for the rest of the world, but as our economic wealth crumbles we are witnessing the collapse of society all around us. So what is going to happen when the economy gets even worse?

Mancebo crowned overall race winner

Svein Tuft (SpiderTech p/b C10) won the sixth and final stage of the Tour de Beauce on the streets of Saint-Georges in Quebec on Sunday. The Canadian time trial champion won the race by 18 seconds ahead of a chase group sprint won by Andrew Pinfold (UnitedHealthcare) who placed second on the day with Brett Tivers (Garneau Club Chassures) rounding out the top three.

"We really wanted to break it apart today and see what we could do and we put everything into the first half," Tuft said. "In the end I just had to think about how I was going to win the stage. I'm happy with this week, we had high hopes to take the overall but, hey, it doesn't always pan out."

Francisco Mancebo (RealCyclist.com) won the overall title after a suspenseful finale in Saint-Georges. The Spaniard finished the race 25 seconds ahead of Bernardo Colex (Amore & Vita) in second while Tuft moved into the third spot on the podium ahead of Alex Howes (Chipotle Development), who placed fourth.

"I'm happy to have this win today," Mancebo said. "The team always had faith in me and they worked for me this whole race. This is sort of like a gift to them."

San Diego California Exposing Extreme Poverty

This is what the US has become, a country that is financially bankrupt and cannot contain the economic downward. All this has caused millions of Americans to lose their homes and jobs and become homeless, however, the American government is too ashamed of their own and try to "clean up" the city as fast as they can.

Where do they put all these people? Where do they dump them? Do they put them in FEMA camps, in the outskirts of the city...where?
Obviously they don´t want the world to know what the USA has become, but soon, they won´t be able to hide it. The levels of unemployment are too high and the poverty, decadence and degradation of society is increasing at fast pace.

We Are In A Depression

What George4Title says on this video pretty much defines how I feel and live. Adaptation skills are very important in these times if you want to remain free and independent, strong and ahead. Those who live in fantasy land and do not want to accept that we are melting through the Grand Global Depression, and those around the world who have become very dependent of their governments and do nothing to prepared, will suffer the consequences of their apathy and stupidity.

Right now it is a good time to learn about gardening, canning, wild edibles, mental and physical health, maintenance, and independent living.

Be well.

CDC: Food poisoning from salmonella up in US - Health - Food safety - msnbc.com

The CDC estimates that 50 million Americans each year get sick from foodborne illnesses, including about 3,000 who die.
The report released Tuesday is based on foodborne infections in only 10 states, or about 15 percent of the American population. But it has information that other databases lack and is believed to be a good indicator of food poisoning trends.
More than 19,000 cases of food poisoning were reported in those states last year. That was up from 17,500 cases in 2009, and about 18,500 in 2008.

Many US Employers to Drop Health Benefits: McKinsey - CNBC

Published: Tuesday, 7 Jun 2011 | 12:26 PM ET
At least 30 percent of employers are likely to stop offering health insurance once provisions of the U.S. health care reform law kick in in 2014, according to a study by consultant McKinsey.

McKinsey, which based its projection on a survey of more than 1,300 employers of various sizes and industries and other proprietary research, found that 30 percent of employers will "definitely" or "probably" stop offering coverage in the years after 2014, when new medical insurance exchanges are supposed to be up and running.
"The shift away from employer-provided health insurance will be vastly greater than expected and will make sense for many companies and lower-income workers alike," according to the study, published in McKinsey Quarterly.
"While the pace and timing are difficult to predict, McKinsey research points to a radical restructuring of employer-sponsored health benefits."
Among employers with a high awareness of the health reform law, the number likely to drop health coverage for workers rises to more than 50 percent, the report predicted.

The Obamacare is only going make things worse not only for medical doctors but for patients themselves. Believe me, I am not a pessimistic person, but a realist and truth teller; and I have noticed through out my life that most of the time, I am always right.

If you Ain't in it, You are Nobody

Once upon a time, Robert Kiyosaki, the author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad said this, "For 2011, silver is the single most attractive investment for any investor." Bob Chapman reported, "We are about 25-30% into the game. We have a long way to go." Peter Schiff predicted "200 an oz." Rick Rule, "Outlook very bullish." Gerald Celente said, "Higher and higher." Eric Sprott and David Morgan both agreed that north of $100 an ounce was likely. Richard Daughty, James Turk, and Max Keiser were the biggest bulls with forecasts that ranged from $200, up to $500 an ounce.

The postal service is running out of options - Business - US business - Bloomberg Businessweek - msnbc.com

Facing insolvency, can it reinvent itself like European services have — or will it implode?

This should be a moment for the country to ask some basic questions about its mail delivery system. Does it make sense for the postal service to charge the same amount to take a letter to Alaska that it does to carry it three city blocks? Should the USPS operate the world's largest network of post offices when 80 percent of them lose money? And is there a way for the country to have a mail system that addresses the needs of consumers who use the Internet to correspond?

Agriculture Industry Fears Immigration Enforcement - CNBC

It was my believe that the USA wanted ALL ILLEGAL OUT long time ago. So why have they been so complacent (looking the other way) with the illegal immigrants working in farms and fields picking fruits and vegetables?
I thought the term ILLEGAL was for everyone. Is it that they -American government- know that they can exploit the undocumented aliens and still get the job done while maintaining the prices of fruits and vegetables cheap? What a bunch of hypocrites!

Exert from article:
"I don't think it's going to happen, but if it does it would throw the California economy for a loop," Coburn said.
The agriculture industry fears a disaster is on the horizon if the one bit of new immigration policy that Congress seems to agree on becomes law.

Resistance Cycling will help you to get rid of your anxiety

I have always compared my cycling style with that of Jan Ulrich, more resistance, higher gears. And this article below expresses exactly the reason why I love resistance and endurance cycling. I have to admit that fast pedaling (cadence) is not my favorite thing to do, although, I can stay on 90 rpm x min pretty much consistently and for long periods of time, but not above 95 nor 100 per minute longer than 10 minutes.

I like serious climbs and long distances using high gears most of the time; but I definitely prefer a triple crank bicycle to treat my 49 year old knees with kindness when I'm tired or have been training hard for several days.

Exert from article:

Resistance Training Improves Generalized Anxiety DisorderNancy A. Melville
After the 6-week training period, the researchers found rates of anxiety remission to be as high as 60% in the resistance training group, compared with 40% in the aerobic exercise group and 30% in the control group.
The resistance training consisted of 2 weekly sessions of lower-body weightlifting, starting at 50% of 1 repetition maximum during week 1, and progressing 5% weekly. The aerobic exercise training involved 2 weekly sessions of leg cycling, matched with resistance training on the body region exercised, and weekly load progression.
Lead author Matthew P. Herring, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, speculated that the greater improvement with resistance exercise might be related to the intensity of the activity.
"Findings of lower rates of remission for aerobic exercise suggest that the effect of exercise was plausibly related to the relative exercise intensity, as indicated by ratings of perceived exertion during each exercise session," he explained. "Aerobic exercise sessions were perceived as less intense than resistance exercise sessions."
In the meantime, Dr. Herring said, the findings demonstrate a strong potential role for exercise in helping to treat anxiety.
"Our findings suggest that exercise training is a feasible, safe, and well-tolerated short-term treatment option, potential adjuvant therapy, or augmentation for patients with generalized anxiety disorder," he asserted. "These findings warrant further investigation with larger trials."

Paltry New Job Growth of 54,000 Sends Rate to 9.1 Percent - CNBC

U.S. employment rose far less than expected in May to record its weakest reading since September, while the jobless rate rose to 9.1 percent as high energy prices and the effects of Japan's earthquake bogged down the economy.

Nonfarm payrolls increased 54,000 last month, the Labor Department said on Friday, with private employment rising 83,000, the least amount since June. Government payrolls dropped 29,000.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected payrolls to rise 150,000 and private hiring to increase 175,000 in May. The government revised employment figures for March and April to show 39,000 fewer jobs created than previously estimated.

The job creation slowdown confirmed the economic weakness already flagged by other data from consumer spending to manufacturing. It could stoke fears about the depth and duration of a slowdown that started early in the year.

Deadly E.coli Is New Super Toxic Strain - Yahoo! News

The E.coli which has struck down four more people in the UK after killing 17 across Europe is an "entirely new super-toxic" strain, scientists have said.
E. Coli Microscopic Image
News that researchers may be narrowing down the strain causing the outbreak came as it emerged three suspected cases of the bug had been found in the US.
A statement from the Beijing Genomics Institute said the bacteria contained several genes that were resistant to antibiotics.
Analysis shows the bacterium is an enterohemorrhagic E.coli (EHEC) O104 strain, but is a "new serotype - not previously involved in any E.coli outbreaks".
More than 90% of the bacterium is the same as a virulent strain that causes serious diarrhoea, but the new strain has "also acquired specific sequences", the statement said.
Hilde Kruse, a food safety expert at the World Health Organisation, said earlier: "This is a unique strain that has never been isolated from patients before."
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed the new cases in the UK as it urged British families to wash their fruit and vegetables.
It takes the number of infections in Britain to seven after three other cases surfaced soon after the outbreak in northern Germany in mid-May.
The HPA said three of those infected in the UK had been struck with the more severe hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) - a rare and lethal complication arising from infection associated with E.coli.
The agency said the seven cases - three British nationals and four Germans; two living and one holidaying in England - are linked to recent travels in Germany.
It sent a strong message to people travelling to Germany to follow the advice of authorities and avoid eating raw tomatoes, cucumbers and leafy salad including lettuce, especially in the north of the country.

Armstrong Attorneys Demand Apology From CBS | Cyclingnews.com

Lance Armstrong's legal representatives have written to the US television network CBS asking for an apology for its "60 Minutes" report in which Tyler Hamilton alleges he witnessed Armstrong using EPO and told of a cover-up of a positive anti-doping control.
Lance Armstrong's legal representatives have written to the US television network CBS asking for an apology for its "60 Minutes" report in which Tyler Hamilton alleges he witnessed Armstrong using EPO and told of a cover-up of a positive anti-doping control.

San Francisco attorneys Elliot R. Peters and John W. Keker, newly added to Armstrong's legal team, wrote a letter to CBS News chairman Jeffrey Fager demanding an on-air apology to Armstrong for the "demonstrable falsehoods that [host Scott Pelley] recklessly presented, and then bolstered with other untrue assertions and facts taken out of context".

Fager responded, saying that "60 Minutes", "stands by its story as truthful, accurate and fair".

The letter from Armstrong's lawyers, sent to Cyclingnews, makes no mention of Hamilton witnessing Armstrong using drugs, but refutes several points made on the show and states that "further factual proof has come to light, demonstrating beyond doubt that the factual assertions at the heart of the 60 Minutes broadcast were false."

In part two of the "60 Minutes" report, Tyler Hamilton states that he was told by Armstrong that, during the Tour de Suisse, Armstrong tested positive for the banned blood boosting hormone EPO, and that the test was covered up.

"I don't know all the exact details. But I know that Lance's people and the people from the other side from -- I believe from the governing body of the sport figured out -- figured out a way for it to go away," Hamilton said, indicating that the UCI and Armstrong's team had conspired to cover up a positive test.

Peters refutes this part of the show, stating that there was no positive test from the 2001 Tour de Suisse. Cyclingnews obtained a list of all EPO positives from 2001-2003 detected by the Lausanne laboratory which confirms this.

Great Recession or Depression Reality is there is no recovery and no wealth!

This is reality folks. You like it or not, this is what is happening in the USA, in Greece, in Spain, in Italy, in Portugal, and in many other cities and countries of the world.
Many people do not want to admit it, do not want to accept reality, that there is a global depression which is worsening day by day and it is becoming to be way more dangerous that the one in the '30s.

When will we hit bottom? I don't know, but the sooner the better. All depends on how long the power that be want to prolong it, and how long it will take for the people of the world to think out of the box and educate themselves and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT: like living within their means would be a good start!

No, I am not speaking gloom and doom, I am speaking R E A L I T Y. You better watch this video that 60 minutes showed, and then, when you are done, make yourself a favor and Google Bob Chapman, John Williams, Doug Casey, then, make your own decisions...and ACT!

JPM Lowers Q2 GDP For Second Time In A Week, Warns Of A

When we revised down our estimate of Q2 GDP growth last week to 2.5% we noted that the risks to this quarter were still to the downside. Given the hard activity data we've received since then -- particularly the auto sales and construction report -- it looks like those downside risks are being realized, and we are lowering our Q2 projection to 2.0%. Even with this revision we'd assess the risks as still a little to the downside.

Most of our downward revision in Q2 is located in consumer spending, where we think growth this quarter is tracking close to 1.5%. If our new estimate for Q2 is realized, GDP growth relative to a year-ago would be only 2.4%, implying almost no closing of the output gap over the past year -- an abysmal performance given that the output gap is arguably greater than 5% of potential GDP, or less arguably, that there are still almost 14 million unemployed workers.

As always, the more important issue is what happens next quarter. We are leaving our Q3 GDP call at 3.0%. In last week's revision we noted some upside risk to the next quarter call, based in part on the potential for a bounceback in manufacturing and motor vehicle production as Japanese supply chains normalized. Risks are becoming more balanced. Guidance on Q3 auto production -- while still upbeat -- appears to be turning a little less bullish. More generally, we need to stay alert to whether weaker first half growth feeds into materially softer labor market activity -- the one area where first half economic performance was solid -- which could in turn propagate the current soft patch on into the second half. Barring that, our best guess remains that industrial activity rebounds and the second half picks up some after what has been an ill-fated first half.

Our forecast implicitly assumes the debt ceiling issue is resolved in a manner which does not see a technical default of the US Treasury. Of course if that assumption were not to hold all cards would be off the table and we almost certainly have to pencil in a much more severe downgrade to our growth forecast. Our Fed call is unchanged and continues to look for a first hike in 1Q13.
